TLO’s 2020 Presidential Election Dialogue Sessions
Between now and November, 2020, TLO will be hosting occasional conversations about the ongoing dynamics of our presidential elections. Just before the first presidential primary in February, we will be convening a series of Presidential Election Dialogue Sessions. This series will begin in January 2020, when we will convene virtual dialogue conferences in January, March, June, and September. Our fourth and final dialogue session will be at the end of October 2020. Each of these dialogue sessions will focus on getting the individuals who are participating fully prepared to cast wise and well-reasoned votes in the elections they’ll be involved in come November 2020.
The essential purpose of TLO’s 2020 Presidential Election Dialogue Series is to help each participant:
Develop their own criteria for selecting one presidential candidate to vote for on November 3rd, 2020.
Develop a reasonable understanding of each potential presidential candidate’s strengths and weakness, especially their ideological biases, their actual accomplishments, and potential contributions, as well as their overall electability.
Understand the threats, challenges, and opportunities that are active both in the United States and in the world today that should be understood as issues of importance in and to the 2020 presidential elections.
Explore whether the United States in fact is losing or has lost its position as the leader of the Western world.
Explore whether the United States in fact is losing or has lost (to China) its position as the leader of the world’s economy.
Explore whether the United States in fact is losing or has lost its position as the leader of the Western world, and must now therefore deal with and respond to a 21st Century world that is populated by more or less equally powerful nation-states like China, the European Union, and Russia.
Come to terms with the meaning of a new global world order which is no longer either dominated or led by the United States.
Better understand the complexities that are shaping and driving this country’s domestic issues and problems; especially controversial challenges like immigration, the opioid crisis, global warming, racial conflict, and income inequality.
Explore the national and worldwide trends, as well as the various social and political movements that currently are shaping and driving our emerging presidential election processes.
Explore controversial election issues like the dynamics driving political polarization in this country, the forces encouraging a revival of white supremacy in this country, and the impacts that day-to-day crises like climate change, immigration, opioid addiction, and rising levels income inequality are having on our constitutional norms.
All together, TLO’s quarterly Presidential Election Dialogue Series will look at any subject or issue that will help each participant get prepared to cast wise and reasoned votes on November 3rd, 2020.
The essential outcome of this effort will be a small set of individuals who, on November 3rd, 2020, cast the most intelligent, evidence- and wisdom-based votes they are capable of casting. Additionally, and of equal importance, the outcome of this effort will be a small set of individuals who, come November 4th, 2020, know without a doubt that they did all they could to fully meet their civic responsibilities. And, as well, are proud of the effort they invested in making their ballot count.
